Aromatherapy

An aromatherapy massage is luxurious and enjoyable. It is a therapeutic massage which also uses the essential oils of plants to enhance well-being and to balance the mind. Pure essential oils are very powerful and they are used in very small quantities. Prior to the massage, a specific blend is created for each client, to suit their individual preferences and to respond to any conditions they may have.

The effects of the massage are enhanced as the essential oils are absorbed through the skin and into the capillary network. The aroma from different oils stimulate specific areas of the brain to trigger emotional responses which can assist with emotional disorders, e.g. depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Certain oils are comforting and soothing while others refresh and invigorate. Some oils aid the circulation and are capable of rejuvenating the skin, whereas others are used to affect various functions of the body such as digestion and menstruation.The art of aromatherapy has its roots in ancient times when the essential oils of aromatic plants were used to promote health and to counteract disease. You need only to think of the biblical ‘three kings’ and their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense and myrrh are still used by aromatherapists today.

There are many ways in which essential oils can be used for health and for pleasure but it must be remembered that they are very powerful and can be misused. For example, some oils should never be used in pregnancy. So, err on the safe side and ask a qualified aromatherapist for advice.
